'It seems like if I don't care for her, no one else would': Angry neighbors evict family cat from their home, but now she's saved by a nearby resident who helps her find comfort in caring cuddles

I live in a townhouse complex with many neighbours around me. I have neighbours that moved in a few months ago and have a cat. I know that because I've seen the guy looking after the cat outside now and then.
  • 02
Everything seemed fine then, and I didn't give a I about the cat, but then something happened.
  • 03
One night they had a massive fight and the guy threw the cat litter outside (and it is still there btw) as well as the cat door (some sort of window you attach to the sliding door). The cat door was left there for weeks until he got rid of but the litter is still there, slowly decomposing at this point.

Ever since, their cat has been outside at all times. And every day for a few weeks, she would just be there waiting to get inside my house. Since it was summer, I was leaving my door open anyway and let her out before I closed the door and went to bed. I'd never leave her inside if I not in my house, because it felt like stealing her.

Feeling like I was doing something wrong, I stopped caring for her altogether for a week, thinking maybe she would try to get back to my neighbours. And I kinda stalked her from my window to see where she'd go. And yet, after a week, she'd still be outside, day and night, rainy or not. So I got her back in.

Later on I realised they would leave some cat food by their entrance door, except they would just leave it there even under the rain and it would be the same food for days.

As months went by, now winter has settled in (I'm the southern hemisphere), and I'm starting to be scared the cat would freeze to death so I started letting her sleep at mine overnight.

I now have a cat bed, abundant cat food, a cat scratch tower, and I even started calling her "princess". She's stays at mine most of the time and is very cuddly with me and never wants to leave. Something in me feels like it was meant to be because my ex never wanted a cat and when we broke this cat magically started coming to mine.

I don't really know what to do. I don't really want to confront my neighbours because they don't seem to be the most stable people. Also I believe they kinda know I'm taking care of her cat because we literally face each others and the woman has seen me letting her cat at mine. Yet they don't confront me neither. It's just weird.

AITA for caring for my neighbours' cat? And should i just stop and let nature decide? I personally would love my neighbours to live up to their responsibilities and take care of her because I was not ready to take care of a cat, hence why I didn't adopt a pet, but it seems like if I don't care for her, no one else would.

Cwtchfairy1979 I agree with everything being said. She's your cat now and it's their own fault for neglecting her. Shame on them. If at some point they want the cat back refuse. In fact if she's not chipped I'd go and get it done. Well done you. Be proud of yourself and stop worrying you're doing something wrong. You've saved her

Hot_mess_2030 You're looking after her, that doesn't make you an AH. Congratulations, you've been adopted.

ececacademic NTA It sounds like your neighbours have essentially abandoned the cat, and cats who are used to being indoors aren't suited to a fully outdoor lifestyle. They suffer. If they're upset, they can always complain to you and take their cat back, but I'd keep caring for the cat and threaten calling RSPCA or something if they kick up a fuss.

zgredka Take cat to vet and check for chip. If no chip make leaflets to ask who's cat is this. If they don't come forward in 14 days. Chip her and take her.

Complex-Cut-5563 NTA. You have a cat now. They have shown that they don't care about her. Please don't send her back to be neglected and/or abused.

FatFats666 you I'll probably get downvoted but if kick her out, she won't make it. She's a pet, not feral & your neighbors should be ashamed. Please keep her inside if you're willing to or call a shelter. I personally, witnessing what you did, I'd take her in and never say anything. They're neglectful

WillowGleam_ NTA. You've essentially become this cat's lifeline in an unfortunate situation and it sounds like she's happier and healthier with you. Since your neighbors haven't confronted you, they might not actually care where she is. However, to avoid potential future issues, it could be worth having a friendly chat to clarify with them. If they aren't keen on taking care of her and if you're willing, maybe you could formally adopt her. After all, every princess needs her castle.

whitechairgenie NTA! Your neighbors are complete a h_les. Keep the cat. It deserves a home. Your neighbors don't seem like they want the cat anyway. You'll probably be doing them a favor. If it makes you feel better, reach out to them and explain how the cat has been visiting you frequently, and you'd like to keep it, and that you're willing to pay for it.

Your neighbors seem like complete a h les so I think they will take the money, and then you can document it, and use it if they ever try to come after the cat for some petty reason.
